A white handbuilt plate is her blank canvas. They are her handprint.

“Die borde word handgebou. Ek hou daarvan dat hulle nie perfek gevorm is nie. Ek werk met wit klei, wit is soos ’n leë seildoek waarop enigiets kan gebeur.”

The beauty is in the imperfection

The plates are handbuilt. The white clay is pressed and moulded individually by the hands of the artist. The plates are similar in feel, but not perfect and not all exactly the same. That is where their beauty lies.

Styles

She makes two different styles of plate: a deep plate and a flat plate.

To order a plate

To get a feel of what I do, please scroll through my work featured on the ‘A month on a plate’ page.

STEP 1 Decide on the month you’d like on the plate. I prefer to paint what is growing and flowering at that time of year; so for the autumn and winter month plates I focus on poppies, nasturtiums and sorrel. The spring and summer months feature blossoms and garden flowers. Note: You can also opt for a plate without a month, then the focus will be on the plant and its botanical details.

STEP 2 Indicate whether you want a verse on the plate. I have been using verses by Afrikaans poets, but I am open to do a verse of your choice. Any verse with a reference to plants will do.

STEP 3 Decide on the style of the plate: deep or flat.

STEP 4 Submit your request on the contact page or e-mail me, tina-marie@mweb.co.za

The Glaze

The plates are meant to be used and loved every day, not just for display. They should be protected from obvious shocks like dropping, or from sudden changes in temperature. The white bases might pick up marks from use, but are easy to wipe clean with diluted bleach. Use in the dishwasher, oven or microwave is at your own discretion. There is no warranty. With proper care though, they will endure and give you as much pleasure as the process of creating them.
